Sydney Sweeney spoke out about Euphoria carousel scene and admitted she got awkward phone call from her dad

Sydney Sweeney spoke out about the Euphoria carousel scene and admitted she got a pretty awkward phone call from her dad.

The 27-year-old began appearing as teen Cassie Howard in the hit HBO show back in her 2019, marking her big breakthrough performance. Widely praised for the role, she received an Emmy nomination back in 2022 for Outstanding Supporting Actress.

Since that role, Sweeney’s gone on to star in the likes of The White Lotus, Anyone but You and Immaculate. But there’s still some core moments from Euphoria that’ll probably never leave viewers’ memories like, of course, when she really rode the carousel in season one.

During the fourth episode, when the teens are at the carnival, a crestfallen Cassie ends up taking MDMA before going on the carousel with Daniel (Keean Johnson).

And she really rides the carousel, ending up having an orgasm in her drug-induced state.

Daniel’s not the only shocked one watching though, as the unforgettable moment is watched by a whole audience of people standing around the ride. It was even brought back up with a re-enactment at the end of season two when her sister, Lexi (Maude Apatow), staged a play about their lives.

Discussing playing Cassie, Sweeney told Drew Barrymore she wasn’t quite as ‘rebellious’ as her character when she was growing up.

“But it’s kinda fun, I’m getting to live out those teenage experiences I never really experienced before,” she said.

Although, I’m not so sure getting off on a fairground ride is the most standard of experiences.

As Barrymore assures the star is a ‘good girl’ in real life, Sweeney adds: “I would never do what she did on a carousel. Like, what?”

But her role did lead to a, somewhat unsurprisingly, awkward situation with her dad as she ‘forgot’ to tell him she was doing the hit show.

“And he sat down with my grandparents and turned on Euphoria,” she explained, while cracking up laughing. That only lasted ‘five minutes’ and she soon ‘got the phone call’ from him.

He was quick to simply ask: “What is this?”

“What do you mean what is this?,” Sweeney recalled saying. “Oh my god I completely forgot to tell him – that’s not the show you sit down with Nana for.”

Differently though, her mum was fully aware of the explicit nature of Euphoria as she had visited her numerous times on set.

“My mum visited me on set quite a few times, so she knew the story,” she said in a previous interview with NBC’s Sunday Today, before adding with a laugh: “I didn’t prepare my dad at all.”

With summer coming to an end, you’ll no doubt want to end the season with a bang, which is why we’ve sought out some of the best ways to see out the last week or two of summer with your mates.

So, if you’re looking for somewhere to go other than your local or a fancy bar in town, hopefully our top picks should give you plenty of inspiration.

1. Try out Bongo’s Bingo

Bongo’s Bingo

Operating up and down the country, Bongo’s Bingo is always a fun night out. And they’re running some Country Specials to close out summer this year. So, grab your cowboy hat and get ready for dance offs, cheesy singalongs, a rave, as well as the usual hilarity that the bingo games entail.

2. Hit up an arcade bar

Arcade bars are still all the rage, with lots all over the UK and it’s a great way to spend a night out. Why not challenge your pals to a game of Mortal Kombat or Guitar Hero or simply while away the hours trying to make it onto the arcade’s leaderboards. And unlike your typical arcade, you can keep the alcohol flowing all night long.

3. Take part in an escape room like no other

AIM Escape

If you happen to be in London, we’ve found an escape room like no other and it’s a great one to do in the run up to Halloween. This 18+ game is one of the most difficult and according to the website “Can your team survive a stay at the horror hotel? Check out is in an hour, if you stay longer you stay forever…” We’d certainly be up for giving it a go.

4. Have a laugh at a comedy club

There are plenty of comedy nights to give you and the lads a laugh, with up and coming and big name comedians taking to smaller stages to test out their material. So, if you find yourself watching reruns of Live At The Apollo or Mock The Week, we would definitely recommend seeing who is performing in the nearest city or town to you.

5. Visit Flight Club

If you’re after a bit of a slower pace, particularly if you have work the next morning, why not challenge one another to a game of darts? Flight Club has a number of venues up and down the UK and each oche area can hold up to 12 players. Plus, you can get food – including pizzas, fries and sharing plates – as well as drinks delivered straight to you.

6. Plan a pub crawl

There are now a number of companies who plan out the best pub or bar crawls, allowing you to drink your way around your city. Alternatively, you could plan your own. And if you happen to live in or near a big city like London or Glasgow, why not try stopping off at each subway station and heading to the nearest pub or bar. You never know, you might find a new local or place to gather with the lads.

Which of these nights out would you most want to head to with your mates?
